In an alternative universe, just 1,600 miles to the east, the president of Russia declared today that “a real war has been unleashed against us” 🖊️ But michael2day believes that the reality is, like most meglomaniac bullies, Putin is afraid
Putin is also eyeing other sovereign nations, like Moldova, Lithuania and Estonia. Is it a wonder that the latter two countries cherish their Nato membership?
Recent historical events have cemented Putin’s dubious conviction that the West has lied to Moscow regarding the eastward expansion of . Putin likes to quote the supposed assurance from then US secretary of state James Baker during his meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990 that Nato would not expand “one inch eastward”.never received this binding promise. George Bush overruled Baker.
That doesn’t stop many on the hard-left joining the far-right in continuing to cut Putin some slack. A daft nostalgia for a Soviet utopia that never was, and knee-jerk hatred for the West and the US in particular, means this persists, no matter how oppressive – how obscene – Putin’s actions become. In the process they do ordinary Russians – including the descendants of those remembered in Victory Day for making the ultimate sacrifice against the Nazis – no favours at all.
Despite the appalling sacrifices Russians made in fighting the Third Reich, just a few years earlier, Stalin, the tyrant that Putin increasingly resembles, was on friendly terms with Hitler – until, the German mass-murderer turned on the Russian mass-murderer. But these are not issues many Russians discuss in public. Some members of the respected Russian human rights group Memorial have tried – but they’ve been locked up.
