For many years, schools have been fining parents for unauthorised absences, including for family holidays. However, some parents argue that it is still cheaper to take their kids out in term-time and pay a fine, than to go on holiday during peak season.

It is a well known fact that taking a family trip in the school holidays is likely to be more expensive than during term-time.

For many years now, schools have been fining parents for unauthorised absences, including for family holidays. However, some parents argue that it is still cheaper to take their children out in term-time and pay a fine, than to go on holiday during peak season. While some families give more importance to their children having the opportunity to see the world and spend quality time with their loved-ones, some schools think this behaviour is inappropriate.

But as the cost of living crisis affects more families than ever before, this has become an even more relevant topic of conversation, especially as we approach the warmer months and the summer. With children having already lost so much school time due to Covid, is it fair to take them out in term time, or will a week or two of sunshine and fun benefit them more than the week of learning?

Do you think there should be tougher sanctions for parents taking their children out of school during term-time for holidays, to deter them?

Demonisation of the poor shows how we are failing as a society - Stewart LansleyDemonisation of the poor shows how we are failing as a society - Stewart LansleyDuring the pandemic, political and press attacks on benefit claimants – which had become increasingly strident over the previous decade - largely stopped. At least initially, Covid – and the personal sacrifices being made to keep the economy going – helped change the terms of debate about how society should function. A potential pathway to improved stroke recoveryA potential pathway to improved stroke recoveryIschemic stroke, caused by a blockage of blood flow to the brain, is a common cause of death and disability. Priorities for therapy include limiting inflammation at the ischemic site and rebuilding neuronal connections damaged by the stroke. However, a molecule that can achieve these therapeutic effects has remained elusive.
