Several satellites are due to be blasted into space
as part of the Start Me Up mission. Named in tribute to The Rolling Stones’ 1981 hit, the mission involves a repurposed Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 aircraft and Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne rocket.
It was originally hoped the launch could take place before Christmas but owing to technical and regulatory issues it had to be pushed into 2023. Additional back-up dates continuing into mid and late January have been arranged in case the launch does not go ahead tonight. Spaceport Cornwall's website states: "This event is subject to change at any moment and there is no guarantee the launch will take place on the first attempt which is currently planned for the 9th of January. We will of course keep you informed of updates in the lead up to, and on the day of the event."
