The UK's first successul womb transplant surgery has raised hopes that more women in the UK born without a uterus might be able to give birth one day
after doctors successfully performed a procedure that they hope will pave the way for women born without a uterus to give birth.
The first UK procedure was funded by the charity Womb Transplant UK at a cost of around £25,000. Surgeons and medical staff involved in the transplant were not paid for the operation and gave their time freely. More than 500 women have contacted the charity over the years. Around 50 are currently going through checks, with a smaller number at an advanced stage. It’s possible that womb transplants could one day become available on the NHS, but this be several years in the future.
