The new Eden Project Morecambe made headlines earlier this year, when the government confirmed a £50million levelling-up contribution towards the £100 million project.
But what's the current situation? Things may appear to have gone quiet in recent months, with a lack of any big public announcements or signs of building work on Morecambe seafront. There is also local and regional activity on topics such as the local economy, contracts with local and regional businesses, future transport arrangements, housing considerations, jobs, skills and education programmes. Some of this connects with organisations such as Lancaster City Council, Lancaster University, Lancashire County Council and the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership.
In a recent spring 2023 forum, Eden Project representatives and people from other organisations spoke about a range of current work around the whole Morecambe Bay region including south Cumbria. Asked about issues such as transport and potential changes to local housing, Eden representatives said they would work with other bodies, such as Lancaster City Council and Lancashire County Council, which had specific remits on different areas.
He also said that importance will be attached to apprenticeship and skills opportunities - in working with good employers to develop the local economy and workforce.
