Zoë de Givenchy’s California home dresses down elegant antiques for an all-American take on ocean-side living, says Ellie Pithers.
If Malibu lives in the collective imagination as “a kind of shorthand for the easy life”, asput it, then Zoë de Givenchy’s Point Dume home is not doing much to disabuse the dream. Perched on the Hollywood-heavy hillock of volcanic stone in Malibu, blessed with frothy ocean views and eucalyptus-scented air, the house to which she retreats every weekend with her young family is the ultimate hideaway infused with coastal charm. “It’s very romantic,” she says, of the rugged spot.
Nevertheless, the Melbourne-born homeware entrepreneur insists that the whole endeavour was unplanned. Zoë and her husband, Olivier de Givenchy, a JP Morgan banker and nephew of the late couturier, had been ensconced with their two young children, Louis and Inès, in their 1961 Harold Levitt home in Beverly Hills for several years.
When a 2001-era, Hamptons-style manse became available at the end of 2021, complete with a pool, a tennis court and direct access to the beach via an old horse trail, the de Givenchys struck a deal. The imposing two-storey house needed softening. “My desire was to turn this into an informal family weekend home where sandy feet and wet dogs are welcome,” recalls Zoë, dressed down in jeans and a cashmere knit from The Elder Statesman. “We’re mostly barefoot out here.
