The notorious founder of mercenary group Wagner has had a target on his back ever since his aborted march on Moscow, exactly two months ago.

Released after serving nine years of his sentence there was little sign of his future role as a warlord when he became a hot dog seller in the Russian city in his hometown. Old Customs House quickly became the place to be for the St Petersburg elite, attracting among his clientele the new President of Russia in the early 2000s.
Relying on his fellow violent offenders from his prison days, he was able to offer good money to war hungry men, and soon gained a reputation for doing the Russian’s military’ dirty work. Wagner has also fought in the Central African Republic since 2018, fighting rebels on behalf of Putin ally President Faustin-Archange Touadéra.
