A Nottingham restaurant is celebrating an Indian festival in a traditional way - with an epic curry feast served on a banana leaf. The Onam festival is an annual event in Kerala in South India, marking the harvest season and the end of the monsoon.
It's a time for feasting and Kottaram, a pan Indian restaurant serving Keralan curries, is giving food lovers the chance to experience the elaborate meal. Unlike the usual starters, mains, sides and desserts served at curry houses, the feast, known as sadya, consists of 20 to 26 different dishes. Things you need to know before you think of booking - it's all vegetarian, you need a big appetite, it's like nothing you've eaten before, and if there's two of you, you'll need a table for four at the restaurant, in Maid Marian Way, to accommodate the lavish feast. The dishes include a poppadum, aviyal , sambar , parippu , kalan, , cabbage thoran, koottu, and beetroot pachadi .
Desserts are included, and along with a banana there's payasam, a milky pudding made with vermicelli. The feast features all the tastes - salty, sour, bitter, umami and sweet. Normally the banquet is eaten with hands, while sitting cross-legged on the floor, but Kottaram serves it at the table and cutlery is provided. The restaurant, which has a floral rangoli on the floor as part of the celebration, started serving sayda last night and it will also be available today from 12noon to 10pm, priced £24.95 per adult and £12.50 for children up to the age of ten.
