‘Africans came during the Windrush era too’ The presence of African people during one of Britain’s most defining eras of Black British history needs to be known as well by LeahMahon_

Migration from Africa after they found independence surged in the formation of new governments for the first time that needed power and management to take on its reigns.

“I didn’t really know my history that well until university. It’s a whole area that is sort of under research and under looked at…Black nurses, Black African nurses that built the NHS and it’s interesting to see not all of them came from the Caribbean.” Continental Africans during the 80s and 90s also due dictatorial regimes that had burdened parts of Africa, many of them settling in London as migrants and asylum seekers. The economy also spiralled under structural adjustments from the IMF and the World Bank

Paris, who is a policy worker, says that she remains sceptical about the rhetoric of Black people who came to Britain during the Windrush period, being from mainly Caribbean backgrounds. She says: “As Kwame Krumer said, whether you live in north, south central America or the Caribbean, you are an African, you belong to the African nation…does not mean we cannot, you know, make nuances and um, and distinguish between continental Africans, those born and bred on the continent of Africa, or have heritage directly from the African continent.”
