Down our back alley, it is often difficult to walk without getting snagged on a bramble or having a nettle scrape my baldy head. We do tidy them up a bit for access but, at this time of year, they begin to bear fruit and we have a ginnel gushing with wonderful blackberries.
I know blackbirds love to eat fruit because they gobble up the raisins and sultanas I leave on the bird table every day. I now have a male and female who patiently wait for me to put seed and fruit out.Starlings, sparrows and finches also make the most of the late summer harvest and robins are keen on blackberries. My colleague Lydia also spotted a blackcap happily feeding on the fruit of the bramble at our Brockholes Nature Reserve in Preston this week.
Blackberries are surrounded by wonderful and thorny brambles, protecting many small birds and animals from larger predators. You can’t hate brambles; they are there for a number of purposes - to feed, shelter and protect our smaller creatures.This blackberry bush is in fact a shrub and a member of the rose family. It can be found in woodland, hedgerows, scrub, gardens, cliffs, verges and waste ground. It will also creep into your garden if you leave things alone for a little while.
The bramble is easy to identify, with its thick arching stems rising up, over and into many trees and shrubs. I found some branches at least an inch thick in areas of my uncle’s garden this year. Clippers were no good, it was time to use a saw.
