Edwin Flay was 20 when Britain's worst serial killer murdered his 63-year-old grandma Renee

The man with a big bushy beard who had a bowl of midget gems on his desk - that's how Edwin Flay remembers his family doctor.Harold Shipman was found to have killed at least 215 people, and one of them was 47-year-old Edwin's grandma. Now, Edwin has written a one-man show, The Quality of Mercy, in which he stars as the mass murderer.

He says when he first set out on writing the play, he wanted to explore whether assisted dying was a motivator for Shipman, Cheshire Live reports. “Writing it was hard, specifically writing about my grandmother’s death was very hard. From the very start I knew that if I was going to dramatise a death it would have to be hers because I didn’t have moral right to dramatise anyone else’s.

Edwin thinks it is “possible” that Shipman’s killings could have “started as compassion,” but that his motives “clearly did not stay that way for very long.” “I’m well aware of many of the stories behind Shipman and just how monstrous he was, and I hope I use those to illustrate the point that he was actually killing for his own amusement.”
