Amid housing affordability challenges for young renters, the surge in home-sharing initiatives is now being scrutinised for potential exploitation, raising questions about fairness and rights for both homeowners and sharers.
"It won't work for everyone. I think there's a real danger if people get into these situations that they're potentially exploited.
Support Match, a company facilitating home-sharing schemes, believes these arrangements offer a straightforward solution to the housing and social care crises. "We might have had every month about 20, 30 applicants coming through to apply to be on home share whereas now that number can get all the way to 70.
"It was the thought of somebody using the room down below," Alistar said, describing a spare room which had been converted from a garage at his home in Blackheath, south London.
