New fees to tackle infestations of rats and mice in homes is a borough have been confirmed despite a Labour bid to ditch them

.

Hyndburn Borough Council will now introduce charge £30 for pest control treatments for rodents in domestic premises from November 1. Labour called a special review committee meeting to reconsider the move over concerns about the cost to hard up householders. The committee asked the borough’s cabinet to create a mechanism to refer those residents who cannot afford the £30 fee into the council’s Household Support Fund which could provide funding for those eligible to meet the costs and to review the impact of the decision in 12 months time. When senior councillors met last Wednesday the meeting approved the amendments from the special ‘call in’ committee. The new fee aims to cut the current five week waiting time caused by missed appointments.

The changes to the fee were welcomed by Cllr Munsif Dad, leader of the borough’s opposition Labour group. Cllr Miles Parkinson, the Independent leader of the council, agreed that the amendments would help protect residents whose homes were plagued by rodents as the cost of living crisis bites.
