Here, Bryony*, tellsI’d known him for years, not that well, but we always said hello to each other and we were friendly. We knew some of the same people. He was funny, and so charming and charismatic. I was in my 20s and I’d just come out of a relationship and I didn’t want anything too heavy. We agreed to go on a date, and had a meal. After that first date it snowballed really quickly.

Looking back, I know now that he was keeping tabs on me, wanting to know where I was, what I was doing, who I was talking to. Always digging for information he could then use against me, ways to drag me down and control me.issues. She was also in an abusive relationship when I was little and the things I saw her go through were horrific. I didn’t think that the relationship I was in was abusive, because it looked so different to the more obviously awful things my mum had suffered.

People found him charming. At home, he was a totally different person. I was once in the park with my daughter pushing my kid on a swing, next to a guy pushing his kid on the swing. Our children were in the same class. My ex rode past on his bike, saw this, came into the park and told me we were going home. His voice would have sounded normal to anyone listening, but I knew what it meant for me.
