The friend of one of those suspected of falling ill after eating sardines from a wine bar in Bordeaux said they had sent the fish back as it was 'inedible'
Describing how they arrived in a glass jar, she said: “As soon as they opened the jar I was like ‘Oh my God, what is that smell’. It was rancid, I was like, ‘absolutely no way’.”
While one of her friends attempted to eat one but had to “spit it out”, the other swallowed a few mouthfuls of the sardines, the source said. She is now believed to be in hospital receiving treatment. “We actually gave the sardines back because there was a fan on the bar and the fan was kind of blowing every five seconds a huge whiff,” the friend said, adding she told the group the “inedible” sardines “have to go, they are making me sick”.is a rare illness from eating foods contaminated with botulinum toxin and can cause paralysis, breathing difficulty and sometimes death. Homemade foods that have been improperly canned, preserved, or fermented are common sources.
“I will never be eating any preserves ever again – I can tell you that much… it’s pretty scary,” she said. The restaurant, the Tchin Tchin Wine Bar, was closed pending further investigation. Regional newspaperquoted the manager as saying that he had ordered some jars of sardines to be thrown out because of a bad smell but others from the same lot appeared to be safe.
