The company has recently refuted claims that its Clubcard scheme does not always offer genuine discounts.
A basket of Tesco Clubcard items has emerged as being almost exactly the same price as similar items at a rival supermarket as the firm comes under fire over its popular discount scheme. The UK consumer watchdog Which? recently claimed that Tesco's Clubcard discounts were not always genuine, with prices on products reportedly shooting up shortly before the offer price is set.
Of the 24 items purchased, seven were the same price, nine were cheaper at Tesco, but eight were actually cheaper at Asda. Overall it came to £62.45 at Tesco and £62.81 at Asda - a difference of just 0.6%.The items that were the exact same price included McCain Potato Smiles, Birds Eye Chicken Burgers, Chopped tomatoes, Pot Noodles, Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Snack Bars and Tetley Tea Bags. Among the best deals at Asda is the 5 for £5 offer on Heinz products.
"All our Clubcard Price promotions follow strict rules, including considering how they compare against prices in the market, to ensure they represent genuine value and savings for our Clubcard members. These rules have been endorsed by our Trading Standards Primary Authority. An Asda spokesperson said: "Asda is consistently recognised as the UK’s lowest-priced traditional supermarket in independent price comparison surveys and our customers don’t need a loyalty card to benefit from our everyday low prices.
