Colleen Loughran from Pomeroy was speaking following the recent publication of All-Ireland Lymphoedema Guidelines.
A Co Tyrone mum says new guidance on a debilitating condition she has lived with is welcome but believes more work is needed to recognise a second chronic illness.
Having sought help from doctors from her teenage years for the severe swelling, she was prescribed fluid tablets without further investigation. The lymphatic system is a network of channels and glands throughout the body that helps fight infection and remove excess fluid. While Colleen says she welcomes the fact that Lymphoedema is now a recognised chronic illness, she wants to see the same for Lipoedema.
"I'd like to now see similar recognition for Lipoedema, which is a very cruel condition and it can result in many women being unable to leave the house because they are in a wheelchair or bed bound all the time. Colleen added: "After my first operation in Germany last June, it took me a very long time to recover and I was still in so much pain when I returned for the second surgery earlier this year but I haven't looked back since.
Guidelines for the Diagnosis, Assessment and Management of Lymphoedema were announced earlier this month by the Departments of Health in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
