Multiple road closures are currently in place in and around Holme and Girton as flood waters continue to rise
Nottinghamshire Police have issued a warning after multiple reports of drivers ignoring road closures in place as flood waters continue to rise. This comes as the East Midlands Environment Agency has also urged residents across the region to check their flood risk as further rainfall this week could lead to new warnings and alerts being issued.
While the heavy rain passed on Saturday morning, river levels are likely to remain elevated for much of the week as a result of further rainfall and slow discharge of water on the smaller watercourses, due to high levels on the River Trent. River flows have peaked on the River Trent at Colwick, Nottingham, but levels remain high as water makes its way downstream.
The A1133 between Girton and Winthorpe has also now been closed. Chief Inspector Jon Scurr said: "These closures are in place for a good reason but I am aware that several drivers have now chosen to ignore them - placing themselves and others in danger in the process. Due to the unprecedented nature of the flooding, some isolated communities could be cut off due to standing water. A total of about 40 properties have been impacted in Holme today.
